Business Requirement
Colt is Europe’s premier business communications provider, operating a state-of-the-art telephony and IP network across 13 countries. The provider had relied upon three mediation players and 13 mediation vendors to support its Europe-wide voice and IP network operations. This complex approach was costly and labour-intensive, as the mediation systems were based on different sites, and were managed by different local teams. Changes were needed to cut costs and improve efficiency, around centralised and consolidated mediation processing activities into one single data centre.
Solution
Intec had an existing billing relationship with Colt, having supplied the carrier with its InterconnecT intercarrier settlement solution since 1998, thereby proving it could be a partner to be relied upon to support a complex project from start to finish. Furthermore Intec was also the right size company with an excellent financial record and a committed focus in the mediation space.
With Intec Inter-mediatE, Colt has achieved complete voice and data convergence with a pan-European platform. The solution currently supports over 50 million voice CDRs for interconnect calls per day, and a further 15 million CDRs for Colt’s retail billing application. The numbers are expected to increase by over 20% with the launch of new IP-based services.

Substantial business benefits have been realised:
- Total cost of ownership reduced by 50%; reduced number of staff required to operation the mediation system and the reduction of support and maintenance fees
- Ease-of-use has meant time-to-market for new product launches has been halved, as Colt only needs to update one mediation system instead of three for new products
